Oncology Massage Explained
Safety is the top priority in oncology care. Certified Oncology Massage Therapists are specially trained to offer a safe and nurturing experience. We have an advanced understanding of the various types of cancer, medical treatments, long and short-term side effects, and the overall healing process.
Oncology massage is specifically tailored to meet the needs of cancer patients during treatment and cancer survivors long after treatments are completed. During chemo and radiation oncology massage can help to manage short term symptoms - reduce pain, improve sleep quality, and increase relaxation. Once all interventions are complete, oncology massage is especially important for those at risk of developing lymphedema.
If you have had surgery, lymph node removal, and/or radiation deep tissue massage is not recommended at any point after treatment as it may cause lymphedema.
Oncology massage is not a technique - it is a highly tailored approach that involves thorough assessment and intake of the client, which informs the goals and necessary modifications made by the therapist such as pressure, direction and pace with awareness of positioning, lymphedema risk, ports, and surgical sites during massage. These modifications are made in response to how the client is feeling and where they are in the treatment protocol on the day they arrive. We are able to confidently meet your needs and provide a safe and soothing experience.
We are knowledgeable, experienced, and compassionate - so you can truly relax!
